The Sports Shed Chicago Spotlight

5504 S. Michigan #104 – Chicago, IL 60637 – (773)-360-1825 – Email: info@thesportsshed.org

VISION- For all kids in under resourced communities in the Chicago area to have alternatives to gangs and violence through organized sports.

MISSION- To provide quality sports gear and resources to schools and organizations who lack the funding to provide safe and successful sports programs.

VALUES- Based on the belief that there are life-changing benefits for youth who engage in sports and physical fitness.

IMPACT

The Sports Shed works with non-profit organizations throughout Chicago who have little to no budget for athletic programs. The Sports Shed serves public, charter, and private schools in addition to organizations like after school programs and park districts. They provide sports equipment and resources to help support under resourced communities and increase access to youth sports. The Sports Shed works to increase athletic opportunities for kids and create safe and successful sports programs in Chicago.

COVID-19 RESPONSE

The Sports Shed worked with their partner organizations to meet the changing needs of the Chicago community while actively preparing for and looking forward to the return of youth sports. Their immediate response to the pandemic included:

  • 200 boxes of FOOD transported to food pantries for local families
  • 700 MASKS distributed to partner organizations and homeless shelters
  • 700 pieces of SPORTS EQUIPMENT for virtual coaching and at-home training
  • COLLABORATION with other youth sports organizations to determine safest ways to get kids back in the game

THE SPORTS SHED 2ND ANNUAL GOLF EVENT

The Sports Shed held their 2nd Annual Golf Outing on Monday, October 5, 2020, at the Hawthorn Woods Country Club in Hawthorn Woods, Illinois. The event raised between $35,000-$40,000 to help fund the building of a new Sports Shed facility in Chicago. Facility space is one of the biggest challenges for sports programs in the inner city areas of Chicago. The construction of the new Sports Shed will give local kids better access to sports facilities and help foster a lifelong love of sports and physical activity.

Executive Director, Tina Sernett said that Sports Shed was able to attract a sell-out crowd featuring 136 golfers who came together to help make a difference for youth sports in their community! While COVID has impacted many fundraising efforts, golf outings have successfully found a way to incorporate people and build community even during difficult times.
