Save the Date: Sports Philanthropy World 2021

Sports Philanthropy World will be held virtually on June 28-29, 2021. Building on last year’s overwhelming response, SPW2021 will gather leaders from around the world to address current issues in sports philanthropy.

In 2020, we were privileged to have keynote presentations from:

  • Warrick Dunn, former NFL player for Tampa Bay and Atlanta interviewed by Darrin Gray, CMO, Athletes in Action
  • Richard Lapchick, Founder, The Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sports
  • Leigh Steinberg, Steinberg Sports & Entertainment
  • Diahann Billings-Burford, CEO, RISE
  • Former NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue, interviewed by Diahann Billings-Burford
  • David Meltzer, CEO, Sports 1 Marketing

We had over 70 sessions spread across the Main Stage, 7 program tracks and small group workshops.

Black History Month Spotlight: Pioneers in Sports

Jackie Robinson – Made his debut with the Brooklyn Dodgers on April 15, 1947, as the first African American in MLB history. After enduring racist treatment from baseball fans and team members, Robinson received Rookie of the Year and proved himself to be one of the most talented players in the game. He led the Dodgers to a World Series win in 1955.

Jesse Owens – Owens was a track and field star at Ohio State University in 1935. He set 5 World Records at the Big Ten collegiate track conference in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He also won four gold medals at the Olympics in Berlin in 1936.

Charlie Sifford – Sifford was the first Black golfer in the PGA-sponsored Phoenix Open in 1952. At this event, he received many death threats and racial comments. This did not stop Sifford, and in 1961 he entered the PGA Tour, becoming the first Black golfer to do so. His career totaled 422 tournaments, over 50 top 10 finishes and 22 professional wins.
