Texas quarterback Arch Manning led a historic comeback against No. 1 Ohio State, helping the Longhorns overcome a 23-3 fourth-quarter deficit to win 24-23. After a disastrous first half that included turnovers and limited offense, Manning settled down and led three consecutive touchdown drives of 12 or more plays, while Texas’ defense shut down star receiver Jeremiah Smith and increased pressure on Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin. Manning finished 23-of-37 for 195 yards and added 24 rushing yards, while running back Hollywood Smothers scored the game-winning touchdown with 25 seconds remaining. The victory marked the biggest fourth-quarter comeback of coach Steve Sarkisian’s career and the first time since 2004 that a No. 1 team had lost after leading by 20 or more points in the fourth quarter. Sarkisian credited Manning’s resilience and growth from the adversity he experienced the previous season, calling the win a defining moment for Texas.
The U.S. women’s basketball team won its fifth consecutive FIBA Women’s World Cup and 12th gold medal overall, defeating France 97-79 after overcoming a 14-point deficit. Breanna Stewart led the comeback with 22 points and nine rebounds and was named tournament MVP, while Jackie Young added 18 points, including four 3-pointers, and Chelsea Gray contributed 14 points and five assists. France initially dominated, building a 31-17 lead during a 21-2 run, but the Americans gradually fought back, with Young, Gray and Caitlin Clark sparking the turnaround. The U.S. took control in the second half, limiting France to just 12 third-quarter points before pulling away for the victory. The win extended Team USA’s World Cup winning streak to 36 games and marked another championship over France after the Americans also defeated them for Olympic gold at the 2024 Paris Games.
