The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) has criticized the officiating and use of VAR following Egypt’s dramatic 3–2 loss to Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup round of 16, after Egypt squandered a 2–0 lead by conceding three late goals. The EFA argued that several refereeing decisions, particularly the VAR review that disallowed Mostafa Zico’s goal for an alleged foul in the buildup and the refusal to award Egypt a late penalty, directly influenced the outcome of the match. The federation called for greater fairness, consistency, and transparency in World Cup officiating, noting that football experts and analysts had also questioned the decisions. Coach Hossam Hassan, captain Mohamed Salah, and several former players and television pundits echoed these concerns, with commentators such as Rob Green, Alan Shearer, Ian Wright, and Jamie Carragher criticizing the consistency of VAR’s application. According to reports, EFA President Hany Abo Rida has filed an official complaint against referee François Letexier and his officiating team, while FIFA had not commented at the time of reporting.
England advanced to the 2026 FIFA World Cup semifinals with a hard-fought 2–1 extra-time victory over Norway, but head coach Thomas Tuchel said he was pleased with the result rather than the team’s performance. Tuchel praised his players’ commitment and mentality but criticized their organization, technical execution, and overall quality of play, describing England as fortunate to win. Midfielder Jude Bellingham, who scored both goals, defended the team’s display by pointing to the difficult conditions and the challenge posed by Norway, arguing that not every victory has to be attractive. Tuchel rejected the idea that England had a mentality problem, insisting the team’s main issue was improving the quality of its football, while calling Bellingham “world-class” for his match-winning performance. England will now face Argentina in the World Cup semifinals.
