Mission:
The Pittsburgh Steelers are proud to be a part of the Western Pennsylvania community. The organization’s strong commitment to this area dates back to 1933 when Arthur J. Rooney, Sr. founded the team. Current President Art Rooney II is known as one of the most active NFL owners and one of Pittsburgh’s most involved executives in civic affairs, as was his father, the late Steelers Chairman Dan Rooney. Steelers players, coaches and front office staff are involved in appearances, charitable donations and outreach programs with nonprofit and community groups. It’s our way of giving back to the community that has given us so much!
Steelers STEM
“Steelers STEM” provides local schools with an engaging digital curriculum to help teach students the basics of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math, and makes sure they have fun while doing it.
The launch of Steelers STEM came in fall 2019 as U.S. Steel and the Steelers reported a multi-year partnership to promote education and community pride. U.S. Steel, an integrated steel producer headquartered in Pittsburgh came together with the Steelers with a goal to bring this education program into Mon Valley area schools. The education program is focused on helping teach the basic STEM education with encouragement from Steelers players and coaches through an online portal. An end of the year STEM Day is hosted by Heinz field for the top performing students.
Charlie Batch, former Steelers quarterback, had the opportunity to visit Clairton High School and speak to students on the importance of STEM education. Looking back at his visit Batch said, “What an honor it was to be a part of the Pittsburgh Steelers STEM Program last year. This will continue to grow for years to come especially with AWESOME partners like U.S. Steel.”
In addition, Clairton, South Allegheny, West Mifflin, and Woodland Hills school districts received a $3,600 donation from Steelers STEM to help with technology needs for learning remotely during the pandemic.
Chuck Noll Foundation
Mission: Award grants in order to advance research related to the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of injuries to the brain occurring primarily from sports activities.
The Pittsburgh Steelers established the foundation in 2017 with the vision to decrease the amount of sports related head injuries. Grants are given for charitable, scientific and educational resources only to nonprofit organizations. Nonprofit organizations focusing on research addressing prevention, diagnosis and treatment of head injuries are given top priority with grants.
The organization was named after Pittsburgh Steelers’ Hall of Fame coach Chuck Noll. A legendary coach, leading the Steelers to 4 Super Bowls in only 6 years. When one of his players was sidelined due to a concussion Noll asked Steelers’ neurosurgeon, Dr. Joseph Maroon, to look into the head injuries. Dr. Maroon and a team of other doctors had a breakthrough, eventually creating the Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Test (IMPACT), a test that is still used worldwide today. Because of Noll’s dedication to his player’s health, players have a scientific method to decide when they can return to play. The foundation was named after coach Chuck Noll to honor his lasting contribution.
